What to expect

NOTE: If you wish to walk on only one day, please contact the FOHT office (once registration has opened) to register for that day’s walk. The on-line registration system will only allow you to register for both days.

Saturday 20th September: Waitpinga to Dump Rd (14km)

One of the most spectacular sections of the Trail. Walkers follow sandy tracks and clifftop trails through the coastal scrub of Newland Head Conservation Park, and will have dramatic views towards Victor Harbor. Here whales have been sighted, as well as seals, dolphins and the endangered white bellied sea eagle. At Kings Beach the Trail leaves the coast and follows roads to begin the long journey northward inland.

Sunday 21st September: Dump Rd to Inman Valley (18km)

An undulating walk with a steep descent into a creek crossing. This section follows country roads, farm paddock fence lines, forest trails and road reserves. Native orchids, grass trees, abundant birdlife and classic Fleurieu farmland views make this a pleasant walk to remember.

Walk Difficulty – The Heysen Trail walks are demanding and suitable for experienced walkers who have walked regularly in various terrain consisting of long-distance trails with some steep inclines/declines, irregular surface with loose uneven, slippery base. They have a walking time of about 5 to 7 hours and will require a good degree of physical fitness.

BIOSECURITY MEASURES – Please ensure you thoroughly clean your footwear, clothing, walking poles and other equipment before and after each walk to remove all seeds, dirt and other debris. Removed seeds should be bagged and disposed in a ‘to landfill’ garbage bin.

Walk difficulty: End-to-End 19

These walks are for those wishing to walk some or all of the Heysen Trail. There are approximately sixtyone day walks involved, spread over five years. The southern walks, from Cape Jervis to Myponga, are held usually on one Sunday per month during the walk season for year 1. For years 2 to 4, walks are held Saturday & Sunday usually one weekend per month. The final year consists of 2 separate weeks of walking.

These arrangements make it easy to walk the entire trail because the Friends of Heysen Trail work out many of the logistics.

The Heysen Trail walks are demanding and suitable for experienced walkers who have walked regularly in various terrain consisting of long-distance trails with some steep inclines/declines, irregular surface with loose uneven, slippery base. They have a walking time of about 5 to 7 hours and will require a good degree of physical fitness.
