How to hike the Heysen Trail independently

There are 61 day walk sections along the Heysen Trail, beginning (for northbound walkers) with the Cape Jervis to Cobbler Hill walk and ending with the final stile at the Parachilna Gorge Trailhead.

If you’re walking the Trail independently you can use the filters on this page to find the right walk for you. For example, you can select walks in a particular region like the Flinders Ranges or choose the distance you’d like to walk.

If you are selecting by distance, you’ll see sometimes extra distances are added. This may be because there is no parking close to the Trail or because you have the option of taking a spur trail. Where possible, we’ve explained why this is.

If you’d prefer to explore the Trail on guided walks with the Friends, you can find more information here.

Before walking the Trail independently, make sure you:

  • Are aware of any reroutes or closures. You’ll find closure and reroute information here, and current reroutes are signposted on the relevant walk section page.
  • Are aware of vehicle access to start and finishing points. There are a limited number of start and finishing points that don’t have close access to a public road – these are signposted on the relevant walk page.
