Transport to the Heysen Trail
Everything you need to know about getting to the Northern and Southern Trailheads and to other towns close to the Heysen Trail.
Getting to the Heysen Trail
Unless you are hiking with a Friends’ End-to-End group, you’ll need to plan your transport to and from your start and finish points on the Trail. You can get to many of the regional towns and points along the Trail by bus, taxi or shuttle service but at 1,200 km in length, it’s not surprising the more remote parts of the Trail can be tricky to get to without a car.
Our maps show access points and you can also find out more about public and private transport services between Adelaide and the major towns and regional centres along the Trail.
Many points along the Trail are accessible by 2WD passenger car, although there are fewer road access points the further north you travel. The roads to more remote parts of the Trail can be challenging in wet weather and you may need a 4WD.
Car parking is available at various points along the Trail, generally in towns, public car parks or on roadsides.
Contact the Department for Infrastructure and Transport, relevant councils or the National Parks and Wildlife Service for information about road conditions.
While you can use public transport to get to some parts of the Trail, much of the Trail passes through areas that are not close to metropolitan and regional centres, making access more difficult.
