What to expect

For our last week on the trail having commenced our journey on Sunday 21st May 2017 ,we will finally finish at Parachilna Gorge Trailhead on Saturday 19th August 2023.Not the usual 6yrs but 7 due to Covid throwing a spanner in the works.

Expect another wonderful week of walking commencing where we left off in June at Mt Little Station. Heading along creek lines past Red Range campsite onto a long though relatively comfortable walk to the finish at Moralana Drive . From there through Black Gap to the climb up and over Bridle Gap and into Wilpena Pound. On the following days we will pass through Bunyeroo,Trezona and Aroona  all of which are significant geological and historical sites. Many undulations will be encountered along the way before crossing the final stile at Parachilna Gorge where we will celebrate with some well deserved drinks and group photos.

6 DAYS OF WALKING WITH A REST DAY ON THE WEDNESDAY, PLEASE BE AWARE THE REST DAY MAY CHANGE IF WEATHER CONDITIONS BECOME UNFAVOURABLE.

ROUGH,ROCKY,UNEVEN,SLIPPERY,MUDDY TRACKS,OLD FENCING,CREEK LINE SCRAMBLES,EXPOSURE TO THE ELEMENTS { HOT & COLD}ARE ALL THINGS THAT MIGHT BE EXPERIENCED ON THIS WEEK OF WALKING.

PLEASE BRING A BOOT BAG AND SPARE SHOES TO GET CHANGED INTO AT END OF DAY IF WET WEATHER SETS IN. THIS WILL ENSURE THE BUS DOESN’T FILL UP WITH MUD. THIS CAN BE LEFT UNDER THE BUS .

YOU ARE REQUIRED TO BRING ,APPROPRIATE FOOTWEAR AND CLOTHING,PERSONAL FIRST AID KIT,MORN TEA,LUNCH ,SNACKS,ELECTROLYTES,MIN 2-3LTRS WATER. ”’ALWAYS CARRY A GOOD RAINCOAT”’

 

THIS IS A MULTI DAY WALK.REGISTRATION REQUIRES PAYMENT OF THE FULL BUS FEE. ACCOMMODATION AND MEALS ARE NOT INCLUDED. ACCOMMODATION MUST BE BASED AT RAWNSLEY PARK .

Those registering are invited to travel up on the bus at no extra cost, from Adelaide to Rawnsley Park and return to Adelaide. If you intend to travel on the bus please ADVISE IN THE COMMENTS SECTION  when registering.

The bus is able to take 20 passengers and their luggage. Those travelling on the bus are asked to pack all clothing, food etc into suitcases eskies cardboard boxes or plastic containers .To ensure that luggage can be stacked on top of each other without fear of it being squashed.

IF YOU CHOOSE TO DRIVE YOUR OWN VEHICLE TO THE BASE AT RAWNSLEY PARK YOU ARE STILL REQUIRED TO PAY THE FULL EVENT/BUS FEE. PLEASE NOTE THERE ARE NO OTHER FEE OPTIONS FOR THIS EVENT.

An EARLY REGISTRATION LINK will be sent out to regular E2E12 walkers on Mon 26th June 2 weeks prior to this event opening up to the general public on 10/07/23

BIOSECURITY MEASURES – Please ensure you thoroughly clean your footwear, clothing, walking poles and other equipment before and after each walk to remove all seeds, dirt and other debris. Removed seeds should be bagged and disposed in a ‘to landfill’ garbage bin.

These walks are for those wishing to walk some or all of the Heysen Trail. There are approximately sixty day walks involved, spread over six years. The southern walks, from Cape Jervis to Kapunda, are held on one Sunday per month during the walk season. Due to the greater travelling distances involved, from Kapunda northwards, the walk is held over a weekend.

The bus will depart from the Adelaide Bus Depot on Franklin Street in the city at 8:15am SHARP.The bus will be available to load from 8am.

Walking from:
Mt Little Station. After returning through Mayo Gorge the trail follows the wide picturesque Mernmerna Creek to a short detour over a saddle on a ridgeline. Joining a track which takes us past old ruins before continuing along Slaty Creek to the Red Range campsite. From there it is an easy walk with gentle undulations along creeklines and through native pine woodlands. Offering spectacular views of the Elder Range & Mt Aleck, the trail then gets a little rocky in the Umberutna Ruins area before winding down and around Mt Idle

Moralana Drive -This is one of the special walks on the Heysen, starting with a delightful creek walk through Black Gap before climbing the walls of Wilpena Pound to Bridle Gap.Be sure to look back from here for specky views of the Elder Range. From here it is a pleasant stroll across Wilpena Pound to the finish at park HQ’s .

Wilpena. This pretty walk is entirely within the Ikara Flinders Ranges National Park with much of the day spent following the Wilcolo Track between the ABC range and the towering peaks of Wilpena Pound

Bunyeroo-This section walkers climb from Bunyeroo Valley up to Yanyanna Hut, passing several vantage points along the way offering great photo opportunities. Heading north the trail passes old huts at Elatina & Middlesight before entering the Geologically significant Trezona area.

Walking from:
Trezona-Commences with a pleasant walk along Brachina and Enorama creeks past the Golden Spike and other significant sites. We then climb to cross the ABC Range where specky views of the Heysen range unfold. The walk finishes at the ruins of the Haywards Homestead Aroona

Distance:
Approx 15kms plus an optional side trip of 3:5kms up to Red Hill Lookout. Which is well worth the extra time and effort.

Aroona-The final section of the trail follows the Aroona valley to the watershed dividing it from the Parachilna Creek catchment to the north. It then follows the valley between the ABC & Heysen Range. Past abandoned mine sites and remnants of a bygone era onto the final stile.

Registration terms and conditions

All walks are subject to you wearing appropriate clothing. Prime considerations are warmth and weather protection. Your safety and the safety of the walking group can be jeopardised by you wearing inappropriate clothing. In an emergency situation it can take hours to evacuate a sick or injured walker. Leaders may not accept people for a walk who have not come appropriately dressed or prepared.

In the event of hot weather, the decision to proceed with or cancel a walk is made by the Walk Leader(s), having regard to risk factors such as local weather conditions, trail accessibility, vehicle support, and the physical capabilities of walkers in the group. In some circumstances, the Walk Leader may decide to amend, modify or shorten a scheduled walk. If a single-day End-to-End walk is cancelled, walk fees will be refunded. Refunds do not apply to weekend-away walks and multi-day events.

If unforeseen circumstances arise and you are no longer able to participate in the walk, please cancel your registration as soon as possible using the Manage Walk Registrations facility on your Account page.

Alternatively you can notify the office by 2.15pm on the last business day before the walk. Walk leaders do not have access to messages left on the answering machine after this time. If your Walk Leader has provided their mobile phone number you may be able to contact them prior to the walk (subject to phone service availability).
