CANCELLED: TS Mark Oliphant CP

What to expect

Come along and explore the little-known Mark Oliphant (formerly called Loftia Recreation Park), renamed in 1996 in honour of former State Governor Sir Mark Oliphant’s contribution to conservation.

We will walk through some of the outer reachers of the park plus along the more established trails while enjoying the bush landscape and hopefully seeing the native birds that are commonly seen in the area including the scarlet robin, the golden whistler and the Adelaide rosella. We may even spot the odd kangaroo. The park is also an important habitat for the nationally endangered southern brown bandicoot.

While not long at about 9kms, it is an undulating walk along some rough trails with a few steep ups and downs so some bushwalking experience and fitness is desirable.

BIOSECURITY MEASURES – Please ensure you thoroughly clean your footwear, clothing, walking poles and other equipment before and after each walk to remove all seeds, dirt and other debris. Removed seeds should be bagged and disposed in a ‘to landfill’ garbage bin.

Walk difficulty: Trail Starter

The aim of these walks is to introduce people to bushwalking, for those who are not regular walkers and those who have not walked in a group previously or who want a shorter walk. TrailStarter walks are usually close to Adelaide, have a walk time of about 3 to 4 hours and will generally be not too physically demanding. Anyone undertaking these walks may have only a modest degree of physical fitness. These walks generally occur on Saturdays or Sundays.

Hazards

Trails are rough in places and maybe muddy and slippery if there has been recent rains.

Requirements

Brings snacks for a morning tea break. Bring sufficient water for your walking needs on the day and wear appropriate bushwalking clothing and footwear for the conditions forecast on the day (including a rain jacket). Hiking poles may be useful if you usually use them but not mandatory.

Experience

While not long at about 9kms, it is an undulating walk along some rough trails with a few steep ups and downs so some bushwalking experience and fitness is desirable.

Registration terms and conditions

All walks are subject to you wearing appropriate clothing. Prime considerations are warmth and weather protection. Your safety and the safety of the walking group can be jeopardised by you wearing inappropriate clothing. In an emergency situation it can take hours to evacuate a sick or injured walker. Leaders may not accept people for a walk who have not come appropriately dressed or prepared.

If the forecast temperature for Adelaide is equal or higher than 32C, walks are cancelled. For simplicity, this can be determined the night prior to the walk from the 7.00 pm ABC News Adelaide weather forecast, based upon the Bureau of Meteorology’s routine 4pm forecast.

Your Walk Leader will send an email to all walkers advising the walk is cancelled. We suggest you check your emails before leaving to join the walk. Even if the forecast temperature is later revised, the walk remains cancelled. In such a case walk fees will be refunded.

If unforeseen circumstances arise and you are no longer able to participate in the walk, please cancel your registration as soon as possible using the Manage Walk Registrations facility on your Account page.

Alternatively you can notify the office by 2.15pm on the last business day before the walk. Walk leaders do not have access to messages left on the answering machine after this time. If your Walk Leader has provided their mobile phone number you may be able to contact them prior to the walk (subject to phone service availability).
