Amy Gillett Bikeway( Mt Torrens to Birdwood)

This event has passed.

What to expect

Originally scheduled for 7 Jan but moved because of extreme heat forecast.

Come on out and walk the newest section of the Amy Gillett Trail. Mt Torrens to Birdwood.  The pathway follows the alignment of the former Mt Pleasant railway line ensuring that the gradients are very gentle. We will have views out over grazing land, vineyards and be constantly surrounded by beautiful old gum trees.

The flies are plentiful and persistent so repellent, or a fly net is recommended. (Or perhaps I should have showered before I ventured out. Nah. I’m blaming the cows and the horses in the adjacent paddocks). Hiking boots and walking poles are not required for this walk.

Upon returning to Mt Torrens there will be the option of staying on for lunch at the Mount Torrens Hotel. I had lunch there mid October and can affirm that they serve good honest country pub food and local beers and wines. Let me know if you are staying for lunch when registering so that I can make a booking.

If you are wanting to come out for this walk but do not fancy the drive though the hills, I have room for 4 extra walkers with me. Text me once you have the registration confirmation email and I will confirm your seat and send you the meeting point in Hope Valley. Keep in mind though, that I will be staying for lunch so not an option if you are wanting to head off straight after the walk.

See you there.

BIOSECURITY MEASURES – Please ensure you thoroughly clean your footwear, clothing, walking poles and other equipment before and after each walk to remove all seeds, dirt and other debris. Removed seeds should be bagged and disposed in a ‘to landfill’ garbage bin.

The aim of these walks is to introduce people to bushwalking, for those who are not regular walkers and those who have not walked in a group previously or who want a shorter walk. TrailStarter walks are usually close to Adelaide, have a walk time of about 3 to 4 hours and will generally be not too physically demanding. Anyone undertaking these walks may have only a modest degree of physical fitness. These walks generally occur on Saturdays or Sundays.

Hazards

Road crossing, cyclists, flies and snakes.

Requirements

Clothing to suit the weather conditions. Min 1 Litre water. Hat and sunscreen. Insect repellent or fly net. Personal 1st aid. Morning tea.

Experience

A flat, easy walk. If you can walk 12k, then you can do this.

Registration terms and conditions

All walks are subject to you wearing appropriate clothing. Prime considerations are warmth and weather protection. Your safety and the safety of the walking group can be jeopardised by you wearing inappropriate clothing. In an emergency situation it can take hours to evacuate a sick or injured walker. Leaders may not accept people for a walk who have not come appropriately dressed or prepared.

If the forecast temperature for Adelaide is equal or higher than 32C, walks are cancelled. For simplicity, this can be determined the night prior to the walk from the 7.00 pm ABC News Adelaide weather forecast, based upon the Bureau of Meteorology’s routine 4pm forecast.

Your Walk Leader will send an email to all walkers advising the walk is cancelled. We suggest you check your emails before leaving to join the walk. Even if the forecast temperature is later revised, the walk remains cancelled. In such a case walk fees will be refunded.

If unforeseen circumstances arise and you are no longer able to participate in the walk, please cancel your registration as soon as possible using the Manage Walk Registrations facility on your Account page.

Alternatively you can notify the office by 2.15pm on the last business day before the walk. Walk leaders do not have access to messages left on the answering machine after this time. If your Walk Leader has provided their mobile phone number you may be able to contact them prior to the walk (subject to phone service availability).
