Update – Re-route due to Track Closure Cleland NP

Please note due to a current closure of the Bartil Spur Track for upgrade works, Gate 9 is currently closed, so we can’t do the route described below.

Proposed Re-route:

Meet and start as noted below. We will go via the Burnside Track, up the “Goat Track” (at Gate 9), then the Long Ridge Lookout, follow the Long Ridge Track up to the Cleland carpark (toilet and snack stop). Then follow the Perimeter Track (anti-clockwise) around Cleland before stopping at the Cleland Cafe. After the break, back on the Long Ridge Track, then the Winter track onto Waterfall Gully Road. A short road walk then brings us back to the start.

NB – Slightly shorter than planned, now with a short section along the road.

Original Route:

Starting at the gate just off Waterfall Gully Road, we follow the gently climbing Burnside Quarry Track, then the Chambers Gully Track in an easterly direction. We take a left to include the Kilto Loop (a little up and down) before re-joining the Chambers Track once more. After an hour or so (from the start) we arrive adjacent to Greenhill Road, (that’s the hard work done) and take the Wine Shanty (for 1hr 15minutes or so) meandering past the Pillbox, Pimpala, Yerang and Lodge Tracks before turning right and heading into the Cleland Wildlife Park Cafe (via the carpark toilets) for a well earned morning tea stop. Refreshed we head out of the park and find our way through the carpark onto the Long Ridge track, and gently descend towards the Long Ridge Lookout. We take the left fork before the lookout and follow the narrow path as it descends around the knoll, and after a hard left at the bottom, taking us back onto the Burnside Quarry Track. From here its a few minutes back to the start, approx. 12.7kms in total.

BIOSECURITY MEASURES – Please ensure you thoroughly clean your footwear, clothing, walking poles and other equipment before and after each walk to remove all seeds, dirt and other debris. Removed seeds should be bagged and disposed in a ‘to landfill’ garbage bin.

Walk difficulty: Summer Walks

These walks are only for when it is not walk season. The walks are generally 1.5 to 2 hours mostly on Wednesday evenings, meeting at 6pm, followed by a meal, close to Adelaide. With increasing popularity of walks some may be in the morning with variable meeting times and longer than the evening walks.

These walks are for those who

  • wish to maintain their fitness outside the walking season,
  • may not be regular walkers,
  • have not walked in a group previously, or
  • want a shorter walk.

Anyone undertaking these walks may have only a modest degree of physical fitness. However read the walk description as some walks may be longer and more strenuous than others.

Hazards

The route includes a shared bike path, some uneven and sloping surfaces, and one section with a sheer drop-off on one side. (Please consider if you should come if you have issues with heights or vertigo). Revised route follows the road.

Requirements

Bring Rain Jacket (?) snack and water. Walking poles recommended for inclines and the narrow path at the beginning of the walk, however your preference.

Experience

Trail Walker, some experience with undulations preferred.

Registration terms and conditions

Summer Walks are of shorter duration, in warmer weather and generally in more accessible areas, the recommendations on appropriate clothing should be modified to suit the walk and weather conditions. If unsure, please check with the walk leader.

There is no Hot Weather Policy for Summer Walks. However if weather is severe or the conditions do not suit the particular walk a Summer Walk may be cancelled. Your Walk Leader will send an email to all walkers to advise of the cancellation. We suggest you check your emails before leaving to join the walk.

If unforeseen circumstances arise and you are no longer able to participate in the walk, please cancel your registration as soon as possible using the Manage Walk Registrations facility on your Account page.

Alternatively you can notify the office by 2.15pm on the last business day before the walk. Walk leaders do not have access to messages left on the answering machine after this time. If your Walk Leader has provided their mobile phone number you may be able to contact them prior to the walk (subject to phone service availability).
