Fires are not permitted in Mt Remarkable NP. Occasionally access to the Park may be restricted. Refer to the National Park SA Park Alerts webpage to check whether there are any current restrictions for Mt Remarkable National Park. https://www.parks.sa.gov.au/know-before-you-go/closures-and-alerts

History

Mark Gray junior built the hut and adjacent cow yards in the early 1900s, milking cows and taking the cream to Melrose, at least 10 miles away. The hut was burnt down in a bushfire in 1988. The area was known as the race course, because local lads secretly trained their horses here for the picnic races. The current hut was built around the ruins of the original hut.

    E2E S2N Mick and Carol. There 7.6.21

    Our last night on the Trail…started in Parachilna on 16.4.21 and walked to Wilmington, then flipped to Cape Jarvis to return to Wilmington. Amazing adventure.
    Climbed Mt Remarkable in perfect weather. Great hut on a green grassy paddock.
    Main tank water good, nearly 80% full, also a lot of water in toilet tank. Hut log book seems to have been missed, it goes back to 2009!!!! and is full/overflowing.
    Needs to be replaced. We left some spare toilet paper behind.

    Walker reported on 18/8/20 that Main tank was 50% full and toilet tank also at 50% capacity.

    Stayed 20/May/20. Watertank connected to hut was empty, but enough water in tank connected to the toilet, though it was a trickle I believe that was more so due to the tap itself. Water was clear and good quality. Rained overnight so morning of the 21st the empty tank had filled.

      Hollie, Thank you for letting us know, we do appreciate this information, especially as the Trail is open once again. Do you think the tank next to the hut was connected properly? IE did the downpipes look OK?

        I can’t confirm, but I didn’t notice anything. I did worry about damage myself so did have a quick look, only noticed an exposed cracked pipe running from the tank to underground past the table, but unsure whether this was a problem or not.

    NO FIRES allowed at Grays Hut including in the old historical fireplace. No firewood collection allowed in National Parks.

    17/9/2018 Stayed overnight in the hut, there was water in the tank. A school group of 17 camped there overnight, the next day there was 20 on there way there.

    Stayed here night of 13/9/15. No fire inside. Was too windy to have one outside. A good hut. Greeted in am by 3 emu. Lovely.

    Stayed in hut 11/5/15. Plenty of water in both tanks, with winter coming on I’m sure they’ll be overflowing soon. I’ve the April 2014 edition guidebook. Gray’s hut location is incorrectly marked on maps it should be north of the E/W Mungola hut track which leads to the racecourse camp prob where the ruin is marked. Coming from Mt Remarkable the Heysen trail also now stays on this track leading to the Racecourse camp/tank not going cross country like on map, To confuse this little section a bit more on map 3.1 pg54 point F is on the blue lined cross country route and on map 3.2 pg55 point D is on the Mungola Hut Track which has the on ground markers?
