Notes

Please note that in addition to fire bans applicable to the Mount Lofty Ranges Region, special fire restrictions apply to ForestrySA accommodation and campsites. Provided that a Total Fire Ban has not been imposed by the Country Fire Service (CFS): Wood fires are permitted within the forest from 1 May to 31 October each year. Gas fires are permitted from 1 April to 30 November. Fireplaces should be cleared of all flammable material for a distance of 4 metres. Someone must be always present and ensure that the fire is fully extinguished before leaving. Forests are very sensitive to fire, so please ensure all restrictions are followed. Occasionally access to Forest Reserves may be restricted. Refer to https://www.forestrysa.com.au/before-you-visit/forest-closures-and-alerts/ for forest closure information.

What visitors have to say…

  1. Richard J Connolly

I was rather disappointed in the lack of facilities for hikers here. There was no communal shelter near where I was camping and no seating, apart from what was appropriated by car campers. If there was a hiker camping area there, there was no signage indicating where it was!

    1. Friends of the Heysen Trail

Richard, That is a campsite run by Forestry SA and the Friends have little input into facilities there. Could you send some feedback to Forestry SA indicating your disappointment and mark it attention Rachel Godoy, Team Leader Ranger, Forestry SA.

  2. Bovey

Apparently this site is often booked out for school groups – though there are two dedicated sites for walkers. A good alternative site is Jacks Paddock, only about 500m off the trail and maybe 4km before Chookarloo when heading north.

    1. Friends of the Heysen Trail

Forestry SA have reserved the campsite at Jack’s Paddock for horse riding permit holders who are riding the Kidman Trail and wish to use the campground and horse yards.

  3. photohiker

Dropped in here to pick up water in early May 2012. Facilities are good with large water tank, shelter, and toilet.

Camp sites looked ok. While I was there I noticed a lot of vehicle traffic around the campsites, possibly because the site is close to the main road.
