Notes

Please note that in addition to fire bans applicable to the Mount Lofty Ranges Region, special fire restrictions apply to ForestrySA accommodation and campsites. Provided that a Total Fire Ban has not been imposed by the Country Fire Service (CFS): Wood fires are permitted within the forest from 1 May to 31 October each year. Gas fires are permitted from 1 April to 30 November. Fireplaces should be cleared of all flammable material for a distance of 4 metres. Someone must be always present and ensure that the fire is fully extinguished before leaving. Forests are very sensitive to fire, so please ensure all restrictions are followed. Occasionally access to Forest Reserves may be restricted. Refer to https://www.forestrysa.com.au/before-you-visit/forest-closures-and-alerts/ for forest closure information.

    Nice hut. In September 2022, the rate was $188.00 for (minimum) 2-nights stay. It felt a bit steep, but not compared to $140 + per night at Caravan Parks and B&B’s.

    I’m probably not supposed to encourage this (but probably not the first to make this observation), but if the hut’s empty the verandah provides, at no cost at all, good shelter from rain. I don’t think anyone comes to check all that frequently.

    The hut’s fairly remote and looks well-maintained, so the price is reasonable for what you get – (solar) lights! A kitchen sink and a wood heater. A dunny block with bog roll (luxury compared to rocks and leaves).
    The non-negotiable minimum 2-night stay is puzzling, though.

    There are two resident magpies that are super friendly and will come right next to you to check you out.
    We were having lunch. when one of the magpies came right up to us, with two freshly-caught earthworms still wriggling in its mouth.

      Nick, yes, it is expensive compared to the huts the Friends maintain. Why 2 nights minimum? that’s a question for ForestrySA.

    This appears to be a lovely campsite (and it is when the weather is good). I stayed a few weeks back during a night of torrential rain and awoke to find my tent in a pool of water, despite camping with drainage in mind, and the camping site was basically a marsh. If the weather is going to be bad, I would recommend camping up the hill a bit further, nearer to the hut.

    The price is ludicrous.
    Daylight robbery…

    I’m walking on my own, only need 1 wooden bunk and only want to stay 1 night. I’ll be walking right on by, ForestrySA

      Hi Focus Folks,
      That hut is managed by Forestry SA and the Friends don’t have anything to do with bookings. In fact all the huts managed by the Friends are free, first come, first served basis.
