SUMMARY:Horsnell Gully /Giles CP (Grade 3)
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This is not an easy Trail Starter Hike.  Read below for all details before you book on this hike.\n\nWe will hike into Horsnell Gully and Giles Conservation Park to explore the Giles Ruins and look out for koalas along the way.  This is an out and back hike of 9km.  We will follow part of the Heysen Trail.\n\nMeet at 8.15am for briefing\, 8.30am start.\n\nThis is classified as a Grade 3\, Moderate hike. According to the walking track grading system\, this means it is suitable for most ages and fitness levels.  Tracks may have short steep hill sections\, a rough surface and many steps.\n\nOn this hike there are 2 major up sections\, along with 2 major down sections as well as some undulations\, a small creek crossing (no wet feet though)\, some fire track sections and narrow rocky path sections.\n\nWe should complete the hike in 3 1/2 to 4 hours.  Including time for morning tea at the Giles Ruins. Bring something to eat and drink for your morning tea. No facilities are accessible on this hike.\n\nAs we will be hiking in the first week of Spring\, the weather can be unpredictable so please be prepared for anything\, including warmer weather.  Always bring with you at least 2-3 litres of water\, there is no access to water during this hike.\n\nPotential hazards: Snakes are more active during Spring\, hence a good idea to have in your first aid kit a compression bandage/snake bandage.  Warm weather – bring plenty of water\, wear a sun hat\, sunscreen and clothing layers so you can cool down as needed.                                                Slippery/Rocky paths – be careful with your footing and wear appropriate shoes to ensure good grip.\n\nGroup Hiking etiquette – we hike single file when on a narrow trail in order to be careful of the delicate flora that often borders trails\, we try to designate a “tail ender” who stays at the back of the group in order to make sure nobody gets lost or hurt without anyone knowing\, we may have to slow down or speed up to create a median speed that is bearable for everyone\, we adhere to “leave no trace” principles (take out what you bring in\, including toilet paper)\, be courteous of others\, do not go ahead of the nominated leader\, be aware of who is hiking in front of and behind you\, if you cannot see anyone behind you\, stop and wait for them to catch up\, this ensures everyone is within sight of each other.\n\n \n\nBIOSECURITY MEASURES – Please ensure you thoroughly clean your footwear\, clothing\, walking poles and other equipment before and after each walk to remove all seeds\, dirt and other debris. Removed seeds should be bagged and disposed in a ‘to landfill’ garbage bin.

SUMMARY:Mt Lofty To The Barossa
DESCRIPTION:An opportunity for walkers to experience another 6 memorable sections of the Heysen Trail in a “single hit” from where last year’s Fleurieu to Mt Lofty walk finished in the Cleland Conservation Park just below the summit of Mt Lofty to continue the journey north through more of the picturesque countryside of the Adelaide Hills into the southern reaches of the  Barossa Valley finishing a little north of Tanunda. The walks wend there way  through numerous delightful Conservation Parks and State Forest areas\, along undulating back roads\, and past vineyards and grazing lands with a few challenging hills thrown in for everyone’s pleasure.\n\nAnother full week of walking on the Trail designed to enable walkers especially those from beyond Adelaide\, whether from intrastate or interstate\, the opportunity to complete these beautiful sections in a single block rather than the normal schedule of an End to End group.\n\nThose walkers who undertook one or both the Fleurieu to Mt Lofty walk in 2021 or the South Coast walk in 2020 will be offered an Early Registration Link  to register for the weeks walking on Wednesday 20th July\, two weeks prior to the public opening of Registrations on Wednesday 3rd August.\n\nPlease note this an Extended Walk for people wanting to do the entire week of walking and not those wishing to do selected day walks.\n\nREGISTRATION REQUIRES PAYMENT  OF THE FULL EVENT FEE which covers all walk fees and bus costs. To register for these walks you must be a member of the Friends of the Heysen Trail.\n\nThe walk leaders are the same as for the 2 previous years weeks of walking.. All are currently leading End to End groups and have each completed the trail on one or more occasions.\n\nFor each walk\, walkers will need to drive themselves to the end location for the walk\, from where a bus will take them to the start of the walk. It should be noted the meeting location for each of the walks is generally around an hour’s drive or less from Adelaide. Those coming from interstate or intrastate locations may choose stay in Adelaide for the first 3 walks and then in the Barossa for the second 3 walks.\n\nExcept for the last walk\, all these walks are challenging\, especially the first 3 walks which include a number of steep climbs and tricky descents\, so please ensure you come well and truly physically prepared for a tough though rewarding week of walking on the Heysen Trail.\n\nGiven the continued and rising number of Covid cases we are asking all walkers TO COMPLETE A RA TEST in the 24 HOURS prior to the start of the walks on Monday 29th September.\n\nShould you have any questions about the walk please feel free to contact John Babister at: jpbabister@internode.on.net or on 0409616270

SUMMARY:Adelaide100 City-Norton Summit
DESCRIPTION:Following the section of the ‘Adelaide100’ from Adelaide City to Norton Summit\, we will be following the River Torrens Linear Park until we link up several streets to enter and climb up Black Hill\, then across and into Morialta\, and finally onto Norton Summit.\n\nThis is expected to be a demanding day out\, and due to the distance\, a reasonable walking speed will be required to have us finish before it gets dark.\n\nIt is a walk for those who are capable of maintaining a good pace with minimal breaks\, and who are able to cover the distance. Also for those who want to undertake the entire ‘Adelaide100’ circuit.\n\nIf you have not recently walked further than 30km in one outing\, please do not start with this walk.

SUMMARY:Waitpinga
DESCRIPTION:A harder Trail Starter due to rocky undulating and slippery track.\n\nFollowing the Heysen Trail we reach the rugged cliffs of the Newland Head Conservation Park where with weather permitting there is spectacular views along the coast line. Whales and dolphins have been seen from here. The rocky undulating track winds through coastal vegetation\, down into valleys and back up to view the sea again.\n\nLeaving the coast behind we walk inland with wide open views of farm land on the right and bush to the left. A sharp turn takes us into the bush where we should see many flowering wildflowers and maybe some orchids. Time will be given to enjoy this pretty area.\n\nLeaving the bush behind we will see the sea again before arriving back at our cars.\n\n \n\nIf the weather is bad on the day the walk will not go to the coast\, it will stay inland and be around 7km.

SUMMARY:EE George Quarry to Spalding Rd to Chlorinator
DESCRIPTION:Saturday – EE George Quarry to Spalding Rd: Most of this section is spent walking south\, initially along the crest of Brown Hill Range\, following the remnants of an old 1840s stone wall (the longest in SA). It is quite an undulating walk\, with little shelter from the elements\, however the views make up for any discomfort. The last 5-6 km follow rural back roads to the main Spalding to Burra road.\n\nSunday – Spalding Rd to Chlorinator: This is a very flat\, but unique walk that follows the Freshwater intake channel for Bundaleer Reservoir\, only leaving it for a few km to go through Spalding. Walkers will see some fascinating examples of engineering from the early 1900s.\n\nIf you would like to register for only one of the walk days\, PLEASE call the office to register after registrations are open\n\nAccommodation recommended in Burra or Spalding\n\nThe theme for the weekend is ‘Water’
